Since I’m not particularly confident dispensing advice in chemistry a la Msr. Tenderbutton, I figured that, as a coupon fiend, I could post useful coupons that I find. Some of the staples:

Linens and Things – buy stuff online, and then pick it up in the store for free. You can use coupons as much as you like!

Amazon.com  — random coupons for stuff sold on their website.

Joann’s Fabrics – for you crafty people. Sometimes they have free shipping, so it’s better than having to drive over there and get it yourself.

Victoria’s Secret – for those so inclined. You know who you are.

In general, you can find great deals on electronics and random e-savings at all sorts of stores on Edealinfo.com.

You can also find great coupons for retail stores at Wow Coupons.

If you have a AAA membership, you can get discounts at all sorts of places, including the Carlsbad Outlets (most Outlets, actually), Champagne Bakery, Legoland, Target.com, etc. See here for more details.

Macs on my mind

Filed under: Uncategorized — twocreativenerds at 11:50 pm on Tuesday, August 8, 2006

So after setting up cable internet in my mom’s house, I get to really wishing that my mom and bro had better computers, namely Macs. Vinh’s starting high school soon, and I think it would be awesome if he had a MacBook. The latest PC notebooks have been getting pricier and pricier, and heavier and dumber and worse performing, imo. Vinh’s Sony Vaio is already ridiculously slacking. The fan practically never goes off, the battery life is about one hour, and the thing is like ten friggin pounds of hot metal. The new MacBook conveniently runs both Mac OSX and Windows XP. Technically, you’re supposed to reboot every time you want to switch operating systems, but I’ve heard that there is a program that will allow you to run both and switch between them. It’s not too pricey, compared to the PC laptops. If I could, I’d buy the 13 inch, 2.0Ghz white MacBook and upgrade to 1GB ram. For $1300+tax, he could have the perfect laptop. It has a built-in iSight, so I can help him with his hw, and he can make awesome videos and musc for school. Meanwhile, for my mom, I’d like to get a Mac Mini. She could just get the simplest one, a 1.5 GHz with 1GB ram and use it with my 20 inch cinema display, wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. I already found an AirPort Express on Craigslist for them. They could both go wireless, and leave the cable modem downstairs, hooked up to the AirPort and the printer. And then it’d be a cinch to get online whenever I came home. I could do all this for about $2000. Vinh’s offered to sell his Vaio and do odd jobs to help pay, and I’d go halfsies with my mom.
It could work.

New roomie!

Filed under: Uncategorized — twocreativenerds at 9:58 pm on Thursday, August 3, 2006

We found a new roomie! Her name is Marcie, and she’s very bubbly and just as “grandmotherly” as we are — she knits! Maybe we’ll have a knitting club. There’s some lady in this complex that teaches knitting, so we can ask her when we get stuck or have questions. I really look forward to the second half of this month, as the guys move out and the girls move in. Then we can really start arranging the furniture, putting art up, and cooking some yummy feasts!

New (re)start

So it looks like I’m going to try my hand at blogging again. I’m not sure why (m)any would be interested in what I have to say about any particular “hot” topics, so I’ll stick to writing about my adventures. This summer, I’ve been trying to get out more to see the interesting things San Diego and Pasadena have to offer.

Last night, I went to a Santana concert in San Diego. It was an awesome show, and Carlos Santana and his entire band are tremendously talented. However, I was disappointed by the crowd’s reluctance to dance. People here really just don’t know how to dance or move their bodies. I wonder if it is a result of the (relatively) conservative attitude about our bodies here. In Colombia, everyone danced, whether you were old, young, fat, thin, male, female. You could see that people at this concert were reserved, and not sure how to dance. There were a number of chemically-influenced people at the concert who danced crazily, but there wasn’t anyone dancing sensually like the Latin Americans seem to do so well. Santana’s music is classified as Latin rock, and it seemed that people were confused with how to dance to rock music. I guess you don’t really dance to rock music, but this music was infused with such an intoxicating rhythm and such sexy guitar riffs, it seemed like you would intuitively move your hips. So, sadly, there wasn’t as much dancing as I thought there would be.

The concert was held at the Embarcadero Marina Park South, and you could get general admission seating for $32 plus fees ($13 fees!!). However, there were a number of people seated just outside the gates who could hear the music just fine. They probably couldn’t see the stage that well, but that seems like a pretty good deal. You could relax out by the marina, sit on a blanket, knit, and just listen to some awesome (free) tunes. I think I might try that when Lifehouse comes to the Embarcadero. I saw them earlier at the San Diego County Fair, but I don’t mind seeing them again.

I had gone to the concert with long-lost high school friend Stacy Chen, who is down in SD for the summer working for Fish and Richardson, a law firm in Carmel Valley. Afterwards, we went to eat sushi downtown (just a few blocks from the concert venue) at Visions. We found a coupon here: http://sandiego.backpage.com/coupons/classifieds/ViewCoupon?oid=oid%3A794720&name=restaurants for 25% off sushi. Our total bill was $30 + tip for 3 plates of really awesome sushi. I recommend the Dragon Rolls there. We got back home very late, so now I’m having a slow-moving day at work. Tonight, I’ll drive to Irvine to meet up with Colleen, and tomorrow, I’ll be playing in a grass volleyball tournament with Colleen. Wish us luck! I hope we don’t pass out in this heat! :(
