So it looks like I’m going to try my hand at blogging again. I’m not sure why (m)any would be interested in what I have to say about any particular “hot” topics, so I’ll stick to writing about my adventures. This summer, I’ve been trying to get out more to see the interesting things San Diego and Pasadena have to offer.
Last night, I went to a Santana concert in San Diego. It was an awesome show, and Carlos Santana and his entire band are tremendously talented. However, I was disappointed by the crowd’s reluctance to dance. People here really just don’t know how to dance or move their bodies. I wonder if it is a result of the (relatively) conservative attitude about our bodies here. In Colombia, everyone danced, whether you were old, young, fat, thin, male, female. You could see that people at this concert were reserved, and not sure how to dance. There were a number of chemically-influenced people at the concert who danced crazily, but there wasn’t anyone dancing sensually like the Latin Americans seem to do so well. Santana’s music is classified as Latin rock, and it seemed that people were confused with how to dance to rock music. I guess you don’t really dance to rock music, but this music was infused with such an intoxicating rhythm and such sexy guitar riffs, it seemed like you would intuitively move your hips. So, sadly, there wasn’t as much dancing as I thought there would be.
The concert was held at the Embarcadero Marina Park South, and you could get general admission seating for $32 plus fees ($13 fees!!). However, there were a number of people seated just outside the gates who could hear the music just fine. They probably couldn’t see the stage that well, but that seems like a pretty good deal. You could relax out by the marina, sit on a blanket, knit, and just listen to some awesome (free) tunes. I think I might try that when Lifehouse comes to the Embarcadero. I saw them earlier at the San Diego County Fair, but I don’t mind seeing them again.
I had gone to the concert with long-lost high school friend Stacy Chen, who is down in SD for the summer working for Fish and Richardson, a law firm in Carmel Valley. Afterwards, we went to eat sushi downtown (just a few blocks from the concert venue) at Visions. We found a coupon here: http://sandiego.backpage.com/coupons/classifieds/ViewCoupon?oid=oid%3A794720&name=restaurants for 25% off sushi. Our total bill was $30 + tip for 3 plates of really awesome sushi. I recommend the Dragon Rolls there. We got back home very late, so now I’m having a slow-moving day at work. Tonight, I’ll drive to Irvine to meet up with Colleen, and tomorrow, I’ll be playing in a grass volleyball tournament with Colleen. Wish us luck! I hope we don’t pass out in this heat!
